How to find the right herbal medicine

Please note that the Kampo formulas are recommended to be prescribed professionally, based on traditional diagnostic pattern(s) derived from manifested signs and symptoms. We recommend that you consult a qualified Kampo (or Chinese Medicine) practitioner in your area to determine, if the formula may be appropriate for you.

If you need to obtain a certain formula by yourself, here are some tips.

  1. Visit the pharmacies in Japan. Most of the Kampo formulas listed on this site are readily available in many pharmacies in Japan. Consumers can buy those (even the ones containing substances such as ma huang/ephedra) formulas without prescription. The strength of OTC formulas is generally weaker than the ones obtained with prescription.
  2. If you live in the city composed of relatively large Asian community, you may also be able to obtain some formulas at your local herb store (in Chinatown or elsewhere). Please remember that most of the Kampo formulas listed on our site have been originated from Chinese medicine.  If you are looking for a particular herbal formula, it is more likely that you will find it under a Chinese formula name.  The Chinese formula names are listed under the Japanese names on each formula page.
  3. You may also seek the formula online. There are very few, if any, online stores that carry Kampo formulas that are manufactured in Japan. So again, try to look for the formula under Chinese or English names. The formula names in Chinse and English are listed under the Japanese names on each formula page. For instance, if you are looking for Anchusan, try the search under An Zhong San or Calm the Middle Powder.
